And Then They Came For Me Remembering the World of Anne Frank |
|
This touching and powerful 60 minute play recounts the story of Eva Schloss and Ed Silverburg, two childhood friends of Anne Frank, who speak to the audience in their own words via videotape as actors portray them on stage. During this time, four actors tell the stories of more than 10 different characters that are somehow affected by Hitler and the Nazi Party. "And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank" takes another step in that story through immediate images and voices of Eva Schloss and Ed Silverberg via videotape.

“And Then They Came for Me” follows the experiences of Anne Frank, Eva Geiringer Schloss (stepdaughter of Otto Frank) and Ed Silverberg (boyfriend of Anne Frank) during the Nazi era. All three immigrated from Germany and Austria to Holland when the Nazis invaded the Netherlands in May 1940. In the play, the audience also meets Eva's mother, Fritzi (Mutti), father, Erich (Pappy), brother, Heinz; along with Ed's mother and father. Anne is the best known of the three protagonists since she kept a diary while hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam. Although Anne did not survive the war years, Eva and Ed are both survivors of the Holocaust. They relate their memories of their teenage years, believing that the world should never forget what occurred under the Nazi regime.
This program enhances the existing Holocaust curriculum by focusing on the unpredictable state of Europe during WWII. The play vividly describes living through Hitler's Third Reich through the eyes of characters based on real people. And Then They Came for Me accurately portrays an important historical event while encouraging teachers and students to think about timely issues.
